CHALLENGE
Poverty is prevalent among rural women in relation to their counterparts in other areas of the country. Most current policies aimed at eradicating poverty deal with the formal sector and unfortunately does not benefit rural women and communities to a great extent. Most live in poor conditions with poor sanitation; and services with little or no marketable skills; no education, unemployment, low wages and land-ownership or land rights.
KLCT STRATEGIES TO ERADICATING POVERTY
- KLCT will promote self-actualization by involving the women in the process of sustained economic growth, social justice and social development.
- KLCT will offer workshops/training and opportunities to gain marketable skills.
- KLCT will empower women through education. "Education and training must help the unemployed and under-employed to move from being unskilled or redundant in one kind of economy to contribute productively to a new economy based on social justice and ecological
sustainability"(1).
- KLCT will work with the women and local governance in ensuring provision of the basic necessities.
- KLCT will assist women by directing them to resources in land access, infrastructure, technology, social services, labor and capital markets.
- KLCT will promote sustainable development if we were to build new infrastructure in a "resource-light, pollution-light manner and invested in public transport; grey-water recycling; waterless sewage; low-energy housing…etc. Such innovations also create new job opportunities".(2)
- KLCT will promote and support programs and resources that will offer sound solutions and address the following:
*business development
*sustained and rapid economic growth
*improvement of governance and security
*raising the disadvantaged people's ability to earn a living
*improvement of quality of life and food security
*improvement of equity and participation
